Monday was our first day of the Splash project. we met up at Town Hall on Argyle street. there we had an introduction to Underwater Archaeology with Maritime Archaeology with Bekki and Sam. we also had a lecture lasting 45mins about the project. towards 10:45am we walked to the British Museum which we veiwed artefacts from the roman and greek times. we then had lunch and were taken to LAARC which is london archaeological archive & research centre. In LAARC we had an introduction to foreshore and tidal archaeology. Nathalie helped us link the artefacts to the period of time their from and we also acknowledged some facts about archaeology in London.
Tuesday we met up at University College London Archaeology department in Gordon Square. we were taken to London School of Diving. we had an introduction by Sarah whom is a qualified scuba diver, she explained briefly do's and dont's, fire drill and behavior. we got changed and went into the pool where we practised 3 basic skills. next we dived down as a group and practiced skills. we were in the pool around 2 hours. we had lunch and left.
On Wednesday we met up at Gordon Square at 7:45 we were taken to Fort Cumberland in Portsmouth. during this session the NAS introduced some of the methods that underwater archaeologists used to measure and draw wrecks on the sea bed we also had a tour of Fort Cumberland. we practiced recordings of ship wrecks underwater offsetting and trilateration surveying. During this time we had a break and went to the sea and had some fun! We drew and identified objects and left for cumberland and arrived back in london by 6PM.
Thursday we arrived at UCL at 9:15 and set off to NAS and the london school of diving we they ran and underwater archaeological retrieval exercise. mark had taken photos of us underwater drawing and measuring objects. we had lunch and before leaving we were given certificates for our achievements on discovering scuba.
On friday we came to the City Learning Centre where we had to evaluate our experience using pictures taken and writing this.
We both had lots of fun and believe this was a great opportunity for us to understand and knowledge more about scuba diving and archaeology.
